Earlier today, Opel finally revealed the Monza Concept and it's not what you think. Instead of a simple coupe, like the original, this is a full-on concept car which you won't see on the road any time soon. It's got gullwing doors and doesn't seem to preview any car in particular, so don't hold your breath on the Calibra being revived.
For now, the only duty the Monza Concept will have in Frankfurt will be to preview the company's future design language.
The powertrain of the car is based on that of the Ampera and Chevy Volt, which makes the concept a plug-in hybrid. The wheels are only powered by the electric motor and battery, which can be recharged either from the plug or using the on-board range extender, a 1.0-liter turbo engine. To further reduce emissions, the Monza requires you to fill it with natural gas instead of petrol.
“Connectivity is demonstrated by a trailblazing LED projection technology for instrument and infotainment displays. Efficiency comes in many ways, with lightweight design, optimal use of interior space, and advanced powertrain technology. The Monza Concept is based on increasing electrification of the automobile in everyday driving, from range-extender to fuel cell. And as far as styling is concerned, we are expressing pure efficiency in a new, lean and athletic interpretation of our typical sculptural shapes. The Opel Monza Concept is nothing less than our vision of the automotive future.”
