Now this didn't happen in a long while... After last year Opel had troubles convincing its workers not to take up arms and turn against the management, the German carmaker is now in the position where it can say "Told you so...!" In a short and to-the-point press release, Opel announced it is hiring.
Not workers, but engineers. Two hundred and fifty (250) of them, to be more precise, to lend a helping hand at the International Technical Development Center in Russelsheim, where Opel says it is preparing a models' offensive of unseen proportions.
"The company has previously announced it will invest 11 billion euros to reinvigorate 80 percent of its model line-up by 2014. Among the projects is the introduction of new automobile concepts, like the electric vehicle Ampera which will come to markets next year," Opel says in the release.
But that's not all. Smiling from ear to ear after reading in its internal papers the new five-door Astra hatchback managed to get 120,000 orders in under four months, Opel also says it will add not one, not two, three or four, but five shifts during the months of May and June at the Russelsheim plant. Apparently, Angela's Merkel 2009 efforts to save jobs in Germany is paying off. And then some...
The neighboring country, Poland, will also witness an Opel bloom this summer, with the carmaker planning 17 extra shifts through June for the Gliwice plant.
