Until now, cost-conscious Europeans in the market for an Opel/Vauxhall Meriva could've opted for a 1.3-liter turbo diesel as the least expensive and most frugal oil burner in the lineup. However, the 1.3-liter powerplant will be soon replaced by a more punchy 1.6-liter CDTI engine.
The outgoing 1.3-liter common rail turbo diesel sources the funky Meriva with 75 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 180 Nm of torque between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm. Coupled to a five-speed manual transmission, the peppy motor drinks just 4.9 liters per 100 kilometers (57.6 U.K. mpg) on the combined cycle and can accelerate to 62 mph (100 km/h) in a not so impressive 16.9 seconds.

With the new 1.6-liter CDTI mill taking care of propelling the front-wheel drive minivan, the Opel/Vauxhall Meriva offers slightly better economy figures than the undersized and underpowered 1.3 unit. The new powerplant is available in three different guises - a range-topping 136 hp version, a 110 hp mid-range variant and an entry-level rendition which churns out 95 hp and 280 Nm of torque.

All variants comply with the future Euro 6 emissions standards and the necessary reduction in nitrogen oxide is achieved via Lean NOx Technology. This system features a catalytic converter that stores the nitrogen oxide, which is automatically regenerated when the storage capacity is used up, making the system maintenance-free.

Marketed as a "whisper-diesel" thanks to its low operating noises and running smoothness, the 1.6 CDTI comes as standard with Start/Stop and is mated to a five-speed stick shift gearbox, with a low-friction six-speed manual transmission available as an optional piece of kit. The efficient turbo mill is said to deplete 4 liters of diesel every 100 kilometers (70.6 U.K. mpg) on the combined cycle, all while emitting just 105 grams of CO2/km.

Already available in Germany, the Opel Meriva 1.6L CDTI 95 HP can be yours for €19,150 (£15,303) including VAT.
