The Opel Karl may not be the most exciting car in the world, but considering how bad the car it replaces was, we're glad to see it. This is the A-segment contended, occupying the same segment of the market as the Citroen C1 and Toyota Aygo, although it has been designed with a no-nonsense attitude.
Today, Opel released a press statement who's true purpose was to announce orders can now be placed in Germany. The 2015 Karl has an online configurator as well, where you can choose between three trim levels and quite a few color choices.

The basic Karl is €9,500, which is noticeably more than the Dacia Sandero (€6,890 in Germany). However, to get a well-equipped car with some dent alloys, fog lights, and painted mirrors, you'll have to pay €12,900 for the Karl Exklusiv model.

For that price, customers can expect to receive a 3.7-meter small city car with a mature look. It's not terribly impractical either, as with the 60/40 rear bench folded flat, Karl offers 1,013 liters of storage up to its roof.

“It is a grown-up car and will appeal to heart and intellect. KARL offers typical Opel quality and virtues starting with the high-tech, quiet one-liter, three-cylinder engine and by no means ends with numerous safety and comfort features that are unique to this segment. The Opel KARL is the ideal car for price-conscious customers looking to combine everyday suitability with comfort and modern technologies,”
explained Opel Group CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann.

Compared to a Corsa or Astra, the engine range is much simpler. You can only order it with a brand new 1-liter Ecotec 3-cylinder rated at 75 horsepower and 95 Nm of torque. With the only transmission available, a 5-speed manual, the Karl can get to 100 km/h in 13.9 seconds and affords a top speed of 170 km/h.

When equipped with the optional ecoFlex package, the Opel Karl only consumes 4.3 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers and emits 99 g/km CO2. This consists of an aerodynamically optimized front spoiler lip and roof spoiler, as well as low-rolling resistance tires.
