Opel's current communication revolves around the fact that its cars offer premium features in the mass-market segment and looking at the list of amenities on offer from the GM-owned brand, it's hard to argue against this claim.
One of the aspects where the mainstream cars and the lower segments are a bit lacking is their lighting systems. You might think LEDs have become the norm, but try buying a Volkswagen Golf and you'll be surprised to find out that the LED daytime running lights don't come standard. In fact, you won't get them even if you order the optional xenon lamps, but only on the top-spec lighting package (that still doesn't use LEDs for either low or high beams). And it's even worse in the premium segment.

The Opel Astra, on the other hand, offers intelligent LED headlights as an option, a system it calls IntelliLux that has similar capabilities to those found in Audis or Mercedes-Benzes. It can avoid dazzling other drivers while keeping the high beam on by creating shadow cones around them thanks to the 16 individual LEDs that hide inside the headlights.

For the Insignia Grand Sport, however, Opel has been able to raise that number to 32 while also maintaining a very sleek headlamp design. The extra LEDs mean greater accuracy as well as a smoother transition between lighting patterns.

The new Astra shows the benefits of our IntelliLux LED headlights, and our engineers have been able to take it to another level with the Insignia Grand Sport,” said Ingolf Schneider, Engineering Group Manager, Exterior Lighting. “The second generation of this innovative technology introduces new features that improve visibility, and therefore safety, when driving at night.

The new IntelliLux LED headlights also include a high-beam spotlight that can illuminate as far as 400 meters for better visibility at nighttime. It may not be as powerful as Mercedes-Benz's MULTIBEAM system that uses 168 LEDs in total, but it will definitely help Opel drivers when driving in the dark.

The Opel Insignia Grand Sport, the model that will first benefit from the improved IntelliLux LED headlights, is scheduled for an official launch next March in Geneva, and will position itself as the brand's new flagship model.
