2018 Opel Grandland X Gets The Tuning Treatment From Irmscher

With the Grandland X, Opel is blurring the line between its traditional ways and Groupe PSA. Underpinned by the French automaker’s EMP2 vehicle platform, the compact crossover doesn’t offer much in the way of performance, but that didn’t stop tuning company Irmscher to try bettering it.

Founded in the late 1960s by former rally driver Gunther Irmscher, the German outfit collaborates closely with Opel since the early 1970s. On various models, Opel offers a factory-spec option called Irmscher Style Pack. Having said these, it’s now clear what the Irmscher-modified Grandland X is all about.

As you might have noticed by now, the crossover in the photo gallery is anything but standard. Twisted spokes on 20-inch wheels, an aggressive front bumper with carbon fiber accents for the grille, redesigned side steps, you name it, Irmscher can do it. The cabin hasn’t been forgotten, with the tuner offering upgrades like fine leather, stainless steel sill plates, and so forth.

Sitting 30 millimeters lower than the standard Grandland X, the pictured vehicle can be bettered with an increase in power of 25 PS, be it the turbo diesel or turbo gasoline engines. At the present moment, the most potent plant available for the Grandland X is the 1.2-liter PureTech three-cylinder turbo, which develops 131 PS and 230 Nm (170 pound-feet) of torque at 1,750 rpm.

By 2020, Opel plans to add a plug-in hybrid version of the Grandland X (and Peugeot of the 3008), which for a change, will usher in all-wheel-drive for the compact-sized model. There’s even talk of an OPC-branded Grandland X, but with Groupe PSA controlling Opel, some voices claim that’s a bit nonsensical.

Priced from €23,700 in its home market, the Grandland X has been struggling in terms of sales. In the month of August 2017, Opel and Vauxhall managed to move 105 (!!!) examples of the breed in Europe. By comparison, the subcompact-sized Crossland X sold 3,791 units in the Old Continent. Adding insult to injury, the technically similar Peugeot 3008 sold 9,017 units in August.
