After the Corsa-e and Corsa-e Rally, the peeps at Opel decided to level up their electric offensive with the Grandland X Hybrid4. Despite the nomenclature, you’re actually looking at a plug-in hybrid with an electrified rear axle for all-wheel drive when the driving scenario calls for it.
Also available in the United Kingdom under the Vauxhall brand for the princely sum of £35,590, the compact crossover relies on a 1.6-liter turbo four-cylinder in addition to the e-motor for a combined output of 296 horsepower (300 PS). Torque is also adequate for a vehicle of this size, and the 13.2-kWh battery is good for up to 31 miles (50 kilometers) of range.

When running in hybrid mode, the Grandland X Hybrid4 has a rating of 36 grams of CO2 per kilometer and a fuel efficiency that beggars belief. To the point, Opel quotes 2.2 liters per 100 kilometers. Charging from a 7.4-kW wallbox takes approximately two hours, and in the absence of a charging point, the regenerative braking juices up the Li-Ion battery.

Even from the get-go, the Grandland X in this specification offers a lot of standard equipment such as a heated windshield, electric mirrors, electric parking brake, intelligent speed limiter, blindspot monitoring, and a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. An eight-speed automatic transmission is also standard, modified to work as efficiently as possible with the vehicle’s plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Speaking of which, the Hybrid4 option is common among LMP2-based models from Groupe PSA. These include the Peugeot 3008, Citroen C5 Aircross, DS 7 Crossback, and Peugeot 508. Customers of the Opel (and Vauxhall) are further treated to the Free2Move Service, giving the owner access to 85,000 charging stations across Europe and a trip planner. A telematics service is also included in the price of the Grandland X Hybrid4.

Given that Opel and Vauxhall had a mainstream hybrid in the guise of the Ampera a few years back, the newcomer is miles better in every respect. The American counterpart known as the Chevrolet Volt is no longer in production as General Motors pushes forward with the Bolt and BEV3 platform for front-, rear-, and all-wheel-drive EVs.
