Opel Convertible Gets Green Light for 2013

How many of you missed the thrill of open-top motoring in an Opel (or Vauxhall, depending on which side of the Channel you live in)? Miss no longer, gents, as the German auto maker said today that a new cabrio is coming.

Opel did not make any reference on what is the name it will be using for the open-top (the single most likely candidate to get its roof chopped off is the Astra, but the cabrio will likely not be wearing this name), but it did provide some very limited details regarding the vehicle.

The cabrio will be using the same platform used on the Astra line, but, unfortunately, it will not be made available sooner than 2013. (The same year will mark the entrance onto the market of a new Opel model aimed at “young and urban” customers.

“The new Convertible will be a great addition to our product lineup,” said Opel/Vauxhall CEO Nick Reilly. “It follows the long-standing tradition of highly emotional and legendary Opel/Vauxhall Cabrios that provided important halo effects on our brand. With its sleek and elegant design, our new Convertible will fully deliver on that same promise.”

Opel promises that more details surrounding the name, details and pricing of the new model will be announced in the months to come.

The project announced by Opel today is part of the audacious expansion plan unveiled by Opel last year. In all, the German auto maker will be spending EUR11 billion on new models, revised models and upgraded plants.
