Opel City Car to Have an Electric Version

The upcoming Opel/Vauxhall city car, which is scheduled to enter the market in late 2012, will have its design finalized by the end of May 2010, as autocar reports, citing Nick Reilly, the Head of General Motors Europe.

There is a segment in which wealthier and younger car buyers don’t associate status with the size of the car. They want a good-looking car and are interested in technology and environmental factors such as CO2, or features such as an iPod connector,” Reilly told the aforementioned source, explaining the company’s decision to develop the ultra compact vehicle.

This segment has great potential – and there are not a great deal of rivals that are successfully exploiting it. That’s the reason why we are working intensively on such a project,” the executive added.

The executive said that the mini vehicle will follow the latest green motoring trends, as it will also have an electric version.

Such as car would suit electric drive,” Reilly was quoted as saying by autocar. “With pure electric drive, it becomes easier the smaller the car because you don’t need such big battery as in larger cars. Electric drive won’t likely be available at first – but it’ll come as soon as it is possible."

Reilly explained that the car will be entirely designed and built in Europe and offered a hint about the future model’s price, saying that from the financial point of view, it will be placed between the entry lever and the top of the range Corsa.
