Opel and its British relative Vauxhall are gearing up for the introduction of what could only be described as a Ford Kuga and VW Tiguan rival, namely an SUV based on the existing Astra platform. The guys over at AutoExpress suggest that the upcoming Opel/Vauxhall model will provide more head and legroom but, of course, mixed with the features we usually expect from a crossover SUV.
And what's more important is that the new project will also be rebadged and sold as a Chevrolet, with the design to be inspired by the Agile Cross Sport concept presented in 2010. According to the aforementioned source, General Motors has already reached an advanced development stage with the Chevrolet, which means both the Opel/Vauxhall and the Chevy will most likely go on sale in 2013.
As it was the case of the Astra, the crossover will borrow some interior design ideas from the Insignia, so expect a pretty similar dashboard and center console. However, it appears the parent manufacturer is also working on a new infotainment technology that would allow wireless connections with mobile phones.
And the available information pretty much ends here. Whether Opel is indeed working on a crossover based on Astra or not, we'll find out soon, as the company is already reportedly testing a new model in various places in Europe. As always, a set of spyshots is expected anytime soon, so we'll keep you posted.
