Opel Astra Gets New 1.6 SIDI Turbo Engine

If you're an Opel fan, you've likely already heard of the new SIDI engine. This 1.6-liter turbo petrol unit features a new aluminum block and made its debut on the Cascada convertible last year.

Today, GM's European division announced the 1.6-liter SIDI engine will be joining the whole Astra range, including the hatch, sedan and Sports Tourer. The new range topper makes 170 PS (168bhp) and 280 Nm (206 lb-ft), which is 10 less PS but 50 more Nm than its predecessor.

There's good reason for this compromise, as the Astra will average an impressive 5.9 liters/100km (40 mpg US). The engine is available with either a new six-speed manual gearbox or a low-friction six-speed automatic transmission available as an optional extra.

The five-door Astra 1.6 SIDI Turbo model starts at €23,385 in Germany and gets from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 220 km/h (137 mph).

The four-door Astra Sedan 1.6 SIDI Turbo will only be available this autumn and so pricing isn't available yet, but we can tell you it reaches a very respectable 222 km/h (138 mph).

Lastly, the Astra Sports Tourer 1.6 SIDI Turbo is a little slower to 100 km/h, reaching it in 8.8 seconds, but offers a respectable top speed of 220 km/h and starts at just €24,485 in Germany.
