Opel Announces 90 HP 1.0-liter 3-Cylinder Turbo

It was August 2013 when Opel / Vauxhall introduced a new downsized engine. Back then, they announced a three-cylinder 1-liter unit relying on turbocharging to deliver 115 HP. Hold you horses everyone, now they’re announcing a version for the more careful type, which produces 90 HP.

Both incarnations of the 1.0 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo powerplant come with the same peak torque value: 166 Nm (122.5 lb-ft), which arrive as early as 1,800 rpm. The 90 HP version of the engine comes with Start/Stop as standard, reducing the average fuel consumption to 4.55 l/100 km (51.6 US mpg) and the CO2 emissions to 99g/km.

The aforementioned values were achieved thanks to the engine’s modern engineering, which includes solutions like a on-demand water pump and variable valve timing. The powerplant also promises to be refined, using a balancer shaft in the oil sump. In fact, the automaker claims the 1.0-liter unit is quieter that similarly-powered 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engines.

Once again, Opel / Vauxhall used the opportunity to add some talk about their new six-speed manual. The unit is about 30 percent lighter than its predecessor and will spread beyond the Adam.

Both the engines and the gearbox are set to enter the market this spring, upon making their debut in Geneva. We’ll have to wait and see how Opel / Vauxhall perform against Ford’s 1.0 Ecoboost and Renault’s 0.9 TCe.
