A recent report published by a publication specialized in auto-related topics claimed that two GM insiders have revealed that the Opel Ampera will be phased out in 2015, but that's not the case anymore. The German manufacturer's very own chief executive officer tweeted that "after the eventual run-out of the current generation Ampera, we'll introduce a successor product in the electric vehicle segment."
Karl-Thomas Neumann revealed on his Twitter account that the Ampera will live on to see a second-generation model. This next-gen Ampera "will be part of" Opel's "big model offensive," which promises 27 new models by 2018. Opel's numero uno continues with: "[We] see electric mobility as an important part of mobility. [We] will continue to work to make electric cars more affordable."
Since the plug-in hybrid based on the Chevrolet Volt was introduced in Europe in 2011, the Opel Ampera moved very few units throughout the Old Continent. It's not known if the updates that debuted on the 2015 Chevrolet Volt will be carried over by its European sibling, but it's natural to presume that the second-gen Volt will share its drivetrain technology with the all-new Ampera in a couple of years' time.
However, the Opel Ampera will also get an EV brother. Earlier this year, insiders hinted that the German manufacturer will get offensive when it comes to eco-friendly motoring. That offensive comes in the form of a full-electric city car, which is expected to hit dealerships as soon as 2016. At the present moment, details are scant about this all-new model, but we know that the project bears the BEV (batter electric vehicle) moniker, and the car in question will be smaller and less expensive than the Opel Ampera.
