While not matching Americans’ enthusiasm for the Chevy Volt, Europeans have taken a liking to the Opel/Vauxhall Ampera, the Volt’s European counterpart. Admittedly, we’re not surprised that the Ampera is appreciated, as the Volt on which it’s based is an excellently designed vehicle, we weren’t really expecting it to be so easily accepted in conservative Europe.
According to official records, the Ampera now has a market share of 20% of the total European ‘green’ market, while green-minded countries like the Netherlands have really taken a liking to it, as it accounted for 77% of the country’s entire EV sales in May and 50% of the total sales since it was launched, last year.
The Dutch are not the only nation where the Ampera is the best selling EV, as countries like Germany and Switzerland (44% market share) can also boast the same statistic. The car looks set to reach its sales goal of 10,000 units, and deservedly so, we say and we can’t wait to get our hands on one to give a definitive verdict.
