Opel Ampera at Frankfurt Auto Show

The Frankfurt Auto Show, scheduled to open its doors in September, will also witness the first public appearance of the new Opel Astra and Ampera, two models that feature several improvements in terms of fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions.

The new Astra will be released, as we told you several times before, later this year and will bring a completely revised lineup of eight engines, with output ranging from 95 horsepower to 180 horsepower. The manual transmissions have been particularly tweaked to cut fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by as much as possible - 12 percent if we trust the figures provided by Opel.

Most powerplants are offered as standard with six-speed manual transmissions, but five speeds are standard on the naturally-aspirated 1.4 and 1.6-liter gasoline and the 1.3 turbo diesel.

“Our strategy is to offer a complete Astra range with fuel efficient engines at an accessible price, rather than focusing all attention on one single, spectacular, yet expensive, low CO2 version. With this we are continuing to provide real-life fuel consumption reduction while preserving a great fun-to-drive experience,” says Carl-Peter Forster, Chairman of Opel’s Supervisory Board.

But the all-new Ampera is surely one of the models that will catch our eyes at the show. The four-seater emission-free vehicle uses GM's Voltec technology and uses electric as its primary power source and gasoline as a secondary source, mostly for generating electricity.

The 16-kWh lithium-ion battery provides an autonomy of up to 60 kilometers while, together with the petrol unit, allows for a total range of approximately 500 km. The battery can be easily recharged via any household 230v outlet.
