OnStar to Sell Mirror as FMV

Announced a few months ago as the long-awaited entrance of telematics solutions provider OnStar on the larger American automotive market, the special mirror developed by the company now has an official name, FMV.

Short for For My Vehicle, OnStar's new gadget is hoped to bring a huge number of customers to its services. On the American roads, there are roughly 90 million cars that can use it, so the fact that OnStar finally decided to take its business to a whole new scale (until now OnStar has only been available in GM-made vehicles) can only spell success for the provider.

OnStar FMV will be capable of doing just the things the similar systems fitted into Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac cars, trucks and crossovers are capable of doing: Automatic Crash Response, Turn-by-Turn navigation and Stolen Vehicle Location Assistance. As an extra, the FMV will come equipped with an external microphone.

“OnStar FMV meets the same rigorous standards for safety, reliability and performance we’ve developed in 15 years of producing and perfecting OnStar for GM vehicles,” said Greg Ross, vice president of Business Extensions at OnStar.

“Drivers of Fords, Toyotas and other vehicles now have the unique ‘blue button’ OnStar experience that brings together the best of technology with the best of person-to-person customer service.”

To be able to benefit from the service, all you have to do is purchase the system. The mirror itself will sell for $299, with an extra $100 for the installation. The services offered by OnStar will be available starting at $18.95 a month or $199 a year.
