Vehicle information and commands via the touch of a button on a smartphone’s screen isn’t a new concept at all. BMW does it, Tesla Motors too, a lot of other big time automakers as well. But the General Motors OnStar RemoteLink system is a lil’ bit more popular than all the others. Because of the ever-changing techno climate and customer demands, RemoteLink will soon be updated according to an OnStar release.
According to the whiz kids from OnStar, the iOS and Android compatible RemoteLink suite is now used by 1.3-plus million active users. 62.5% of those drive Chevrolet models (Silverado pickup truck has the most users in North America), while GMC owners claim 20.8% of the registrations in their pie charts. Ranking third is Cadillac (8.6%), while the fourth in the list is Buick (8.1% active users).

According to analytics offered by OnStar, the app is used by most users (35%) to remote start the vehicle, while 26% of the total pool make use of it to analyze vehicle diagnostics. Only 11% needed to locate their vehicle through RemoteLink, while 10% percent of users locked the doors through it. Controlling a car via your tablet or smartphone is the next big thing for the industry, apparently...

I admit I’m not a big fan of electronic nannies, but some RemoteLink features are truly useful if the situation demands to use the app. With this latest update, RemoteLink comes with a new interface that permits the user to the seek anything needed, albeit with a more intuitive, simpler, clean design for the interface. The updated app will provide its customers with more adapted-for-smartphone information as well, including access to account data previously only available by calling an operator or by accessing OnStar.com.

Available for iOS, Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry devices, the RemoteLink update will soon arrive to users on every system’s particular app store. The remote features of the app – ability to remotely start/stop an engine with factory-installed remote start, lock and unlock automatic door locks and activate the horn and lights - are included with no cost for 5 years from delivery on 2014MY and newer GM cars.
