Earlier this year, at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Chevrolet announced plans to introduce OnStar with 4G LTE on several 2015 model year cars, including the Corvette, Impala and the Volt.
That’s good news for drivers looking to turn their vehicles into Wi-Fi hotspots, but it appears that OnStar decided to discontinue the FMV (For My Vehicle) service, which provides telematics service to vehicles outside the General Motors family for $299 per year.
“As far as OnStar FMV goes, we have decided to discontinue producing any additional OnStar FMV units. Those who have purchased OnStar FMV will continue to receive OnStar service for as long as they choose to subscribe. We have gained a number of key insights by launching OnStar FMV that will be very valuable as we investigate future ventures in the retail space,” an OnStar official told GM Authority earlier this week.
Going back to the upcoming OnStar 4G LTE, Chevrolet will showcase the in-vehicle technology at the 2014 South by Southwest (SXSW) Trade Show in Austin, Texas, from March 9 through 12.
Chevrolet will introduce OnStar 4G LTE connectivity on the 2015 model year Corvette, Impala, Malibu and Volt. The technology will also become available on the Equinox, Silverado, Silverado HD, Spark, Spark EV and the Trax (Canada only) at a later date.
The built-in Wi-Fi hotspot will allow drivers and passengers to connect their personal devices, such as smartphones, laptops and tablets, to high-speed wireless internet. Pricing will be announced later this year.
