OnStar Breaks 200,000 Clients Mark in China

GM, and every other business it operates seems to be feeling very comfortable in China, where not only its cars, but its services too seem to be very appreciated. OnStar, the GM division in charge with infotainment, customer care and telematics, announced today that it has manage to pass a new milestone in its existence.

As of this week, OnStar has a little over 200,000 subscribers in the world's biggest automotive market. And, judging by all the signs, China has no intention of stopping here.

China passed the US as the world's leading automotive market in 2010, reaching a total number of vehicles sold of 18 million units. The resulting situation (more crowded roads, a bigger need for telematics) lead to the increase in demand for OnStar services.

“This significant milestone shows that drivers in China truly value our services,” said Jon Hyde, general manager of Shanghai OnStar Telematics. “We look forward to continuing to build on our leadership position in China by bringing new and enhanced services in the near future.”

When announcing the new milestone, OnStar also released a sum-up of what it has managed to do for the other 199,000 customers in has in China. Since its arrival in the Asian country, OnStar send crash notifications through the Automatic Crash Response for 1,460 victims and helped recover 50 stolen vehicles.

No less than 37,000 remote door unlocks have been performed for the unlucky owners who left the keys in their cars or wherever, while an unknown number of people were guided through their destination with the 1.8 million Turn-by-Turn Navigation routes.
