Only for Japan: BMW 118i Fashionista Introduced

Japan is seemingly really big on special edition BMWs. That’s basically the only way we can justify the abundance of such cars being launched in the Asian country lately. It feels like there’s a new one on the table every month.

The latest addition to this impressive list is the BMW 118i Fashionista. Based on the facelifted 1 Series 5-door Hatch, the car is now being advertised everywhere in Japan and will go on sale starting September 5.

So what unique features does it bring to the table? Well, as is the case most of the time, it’s nothing you can’t get on your own but rather the way the optional features were combined to offer a great package.

As you can see from the photos, the 118i Fashionista comes in either Crimson Red or Mineral White, two colors that are then combined with 17” Y-spoke wheels. With the aim of the car being to appeal to those more fashion-savvy than us, it’s pretty clear to see that this combination does make sense.

Just like the Urban Line of the 1 Series Hatch pre-facelift model, the Fashionista brings a rather modest engine to the mix, the 118i being powered by a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder turbocharged mill good for 136 HP and 220 Nm (162 lb-ft) of torque.

As soon as you step inside the cabin, the combination presented to the owner also features things that would be preferred by those more in tune with current trends than not. Oyster Dakota leather is included as standard while the trims available are done in white acrylic, together offering the impression of a modern and bright interior, one that’s pleasing to the ‘fashionistas’ that are going to buy it.

As far as tech tidbits go, you get the light alloys we were talking about above, the new LED headlamps, Active Cruise Control, Pedestrian Detection, Rear-view camera with Park Distance Control, Lane Keeping Assistant, 40:20:40 foldable rear seats and, of course, the new iDrive system with the 8-speed automatic gearbox. Basically, this is the successor of the Urban Line model, configured to offer the best comfort around crowded cities.

Prices for the 118i Fashionista BMW start at JPY3,950,000 which translates into roughly $33,000 at today’s rates. Considering the equipment you get, it’s not a bad deal but only 380 units will be made so you’d better hurry up.
