Mercedes-Benz USA will be moving to a new location in Atlanta, Georgia by 2017, leaving its home for the last 40 years in Montvale, New Jersey behind. However, in this daring move, the company is slated to lose around 60 percent of its employees.
Speaking to AutoNews, Steve Cannon, the CEO of the German manufacturer’s US branch said that only 40 percent of its 1,053 employees that currently work at the HQ are willing to move down south, based on the experiences of other companies.
"We will lose talent, and that is an unfortunate byproduct of a move like this. It will be painful for people who have helped our company," Cannon said. "For us, this is an important opportunity for the future."
So far, the employees apparently received offers on moving from the company and they have until April 15 to make a decision. One thing that could help them make their decision easier is the fact that the cost of living in the capital city of Georgia is around 30 percent lower than in New Jersey’s Montvale.
The move carried out by Mercedes in the next few years will aim at a couple of issues. Atlanta is only two hours away from the company’s factory in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Furthermore, the plant now has a new employee immersion center that was open late last year. That's where more than 26,000 corporate and dealership employees will attend a two-day immersion program in Mercedes-Benz culture.
