Seeing a red Golf with double exhausts at the back on US roads, you’d be forgiven for thinking some boy racer has fitted an aftermarket exhaust to his diesel-powered car. However, this might not actually be the case.
Jalopnik has learned that the first batch of cars is coming to the States in red. The initial rumor was that they were all going to be this color, but VW has confirmed it was only a pre-order, and more tones are on the was.
If you have your heart set on one in red, blue or gray, then you’d better have your cash ready, since only 1,000 are coming stateside.
For the latest incarnation, the VW Golf R, which is considerably different compared to the regular Golf in terms of exterior styling, has ditched the naturally aspirated 3.2-liter V6 that made it famous in favor of a 2.0 TSI turbo four-cylinder direct injection engine that puts out 270 hp at 6,000 rpm. This enables it to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 5.7 seconds. The maximum speed of the Volkswagen Golf R is limited to 250 km/h (155 mph).
Unlike the R32, the new R model will offer performance greater than the GTI’s, with the slightly increased weight and resistance of the AWD system easily offset by the leap in power and torque.
We recently reported that the VW Golf GTI Edition 35 will also make the journey across the ocean. It will actually be known as the 30 Edition, as the model is celebrating that many years of existence in the new world, plus it has a nice well-rounded sound to it.
Golf R or GTI Edition 30 - the choice is yours!
