Online Ferrari 250 GTO Auction is the Ultimate Spam

The Ferrari 250 GTO is easily one of the most valuable cars on the planet. Chassis no. 5111GT sold last year for $52 million and chassis no. 3851GT is expected to eclipse that mark later this month at the Bonhams Quail Lodge Auction. A listing on German auction site mobile.de currently has a ’62 250 GTO listed for €47.6 million (close to $64 million).
As it turns out, though, this listing is likely little more than a well-executed spam posting on the auction site. With only 39 Ferrari 250 GTO coupes in existence, it isn’t too hard to track the history of these cars, and CNBC is reporting that Ferrari historian and expert Marcel Massini claims that this car is a fake.

"It's a replica. I can tell you that with 100 percent certainty. I know where all of these cars are today. And this is not one of the original GTOs," Massini said.

Of course, it doesn’t take too much investigation to figure out this is a fake as the description says the listing is sponsored by a company that sells an anti-aging compound, and the car’s buyer will also receive a year supply of the miracle cream. On top of that, even though mobile.de is a reputable site and a subsidiary of eBay, Massini says the fact that this car is listed online in the first place is a dead giveaway to its fake nature.

"People who buy and sell these cars are sophisticated. They're not going to buy it or list it on a website like this," he said.

With that being said, if there is a car that goes along with auction listing, a high-quality replica is still worth some big dollars. Seeing as the images used on this listing are “examples” of the car and not actual photos, we’re pretty sure the company behind it is just looking for some free publicity, and judging by how many outlets have reported on this particular auction, mission accomplished.
