Onewheel Electric MonocycleBrings the Future of Personal Transport Closer

It looks weird and fun, and it comes from Japan. Welcome Onewheel, one of the debut mass-produced electric monocycles which will attempt to create a new lucrative niche in personal transport. We have seen a lot of similar prototypes surfacing during the past years, but this looks like the first bold shot at a mass-production ride.

The concept is not new, as Onewheel obviously involves a gyro to keep things balanced and safe. However, the manufacturers say they improved the response of the balancing system and that Onewheel might represent a great foundation for the development of high-performance, high-speed similar vehicles.

One-wheel vehicles safe up to 100 km/h in the future

One of the drawbacks of the single-wheeled vehicles is that sudden moves tend to destabilize them and pose a major safety hazard. Onewheel's manufacturers say they've upped the game significantly, and the near future will bring one-wheeled vehicles that can safely accelerate to 60-100 km/h (37-62 mph), with the corresponding braking power and behavior, as well.

The Onewheel electric monocycle can be steered with both handlebars and by shifting the body weight, and comes with two battery sizes. It can reach 20 km/h (12 mph) and a charge can last for 15-30 km (9-18 miles), or double, with the extra juice pack.

The bike weights 25 kg (55 lb) and 200 units will be manufactured for testing in the real life in Japan only. Prices will vary between $2,000 and $2,500 (€1,850-2,200).
