One Third of the French Speed Bumps Are Illegal

An investigation carried out by one of the journalists of the French magazine Auto Plus revealed that about one third of the speed bumps they analyzed around the country were, in one way or another, illegal.

And to prove this, the chap brought in levels, measuring tapes, laser markers and all the gear an engineer would use in a similar predicament.

To his and the public dismay, around one third of the speed bumps he measured in 23 communes around the country were off the official scale in terms of length, height, steepness or even position.

A very serious law-breaking finding saw speed bumps installed in completely different road sectors than what the law specifies. Speed bumps are reportedly allowed in road sectors with a 30 km/h () limitation, but the journalist found some in a 70 km/h () area, too in Charolles (Saône-et-Loire).

Other similarly illegal and silly situations have also been reported. The village of Moussy-le-Neuf in Seine-et-Marne allegedly has 50 such traffic-calming devices. Le Parisien says in this case we're dealing with one speed bump for each 56 inhabitants of the village, which is definitely stupid.

Finally, the inquiry also detected bumps 17cm-tall (), while the maximum legal height is 10cm (). 32% of the speed bumps are not signaled in any way, thus also illegal, alongside 18% which are too high, too steep or too short and some 22% which are located in the wrong place.

Somebody in Paris better prepare with some answers, soon...
