Back in 1966, Chevrolet decided to make the Chevelle SS 396 a series of its own, though this strategy ended up being used only for a couple of years.
As a result, the SS 396 eventually rebecame an option package in 1979, so in theory, the model years 1966 and 1967 were the only ones when this sportier Chevelle played by its own rules.

And what we have here is one of these Chevelles, with the seller explaining that almost everything is still original. But this “almost everything” mention is the one that could make some potential buyers walk away.

As you can figure out by quickly browsing the photo gallery in the article, the car doesn’t come in its best shape, yet it’s not a rust bucket either. eBay seller clarkbuys says the car is a barn find, and one of its strong points is the very limited amount of rust, which can be seen in the photos on the passenger-side floor.

Obviously, the vehicle needs a full restoration, but let’s move our attention to what’s happening under the hood.

Naturally, a 1967 Chevelle SS should come with a 396 (6.4-liter) V8 under the hood, but as it turns out, this model right here no longer features the original unit. And it’s all because Chevrolet apparently replaced the factory 396 with a new unit under warranty back in 1968.

No further specifics have been provided, but in theory, you’re still getting a matching-numbers unit paired with a 4-speed transmission.

The good news is the car is currently being sold as part of a no-reserve auction, so eventually, whoever sends the highest bid can take it home. This is what caught the attention of so many people, as the auction has already received no less than 63 bids, with the top offer at the time of writing exceeding $16,200.
