Usually, when putting together General Motors, the Chevrolet Corvette, and Pace Car duties in one sentence you would be inclined to also add Indianapolis 500. Still, there are other races that were linked to the American sports car, such as the 2008 edition of the Daytona 500. And this 29-mile 2008 ‘Vette Pace Car was there, though not exactly for the main event.
Chevrolet Corvette Pace Car aficionados will remember that just like it was the case with the 2005, ‘06, and ‘07 editions of the NASCAR Cup Series taking place at the Daytona International Speedway, the ‘08 event had GM’s sports car in front of the pack.
And the 50th running of “The Great American Race” had a Chevrolet Corvette Pace Car with a very special, anniversary, gold design. Which had exactly nothing to do with the example seen here listed for the Mecum Auctions event in Dallas that will be held on October 15th-17th at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center.
Yet, this 29-mile one of two examples was there – it was the official Pace Car for the Gatorade Duel at Daytona that took place on February 14, 2008, as you can see on the rear license plate. You can even check out the gallery if you’re also curious about the name of the winner.
The white and orange Corvette sports a Gatorade-inspired “Duel” livery and comes equipped with the 6.2-liter 430-hp LS3 V8 engine that was brand new back in 2008 and quickly enhanced the performance of the C6 series.
Equipped with the faster automatic transmission just like the unit seen here, the sports car was capable of sprinting to 60 mph (96 kph) in exactly four seconds, according to the company.
With just 29 miles on the odometer, the ‘Vette looks exactly the same as it did the day of the Daytona event more than 12 years ago. A proud member of the “Low Mileage Corvette Pace Car Collection”, all of its creature comforts should be in working order – from the 6-disc CD stereo (does anyone even remember what it was like to play with the changer?!) down to the black leather interior, or the Selective Ride Control.
