Don’t get me wrong, I only saw this TV spot by mistake. It so happens I was heading to the car to hit the road for a weekend road trip when I accidentally saw a video teaser running on ABC. Since “The Bachelorette” season 11 premieres on Monday, they’ve been bragging a lot about the new series of the reality dating game show lately. The TV program is not what got my attention, of course, but one of the contestants' car did.
Hey, we’re pretty sure it happens to you guys quite often. We, car people, only watch petrolhead stuff on TV, of course. But since we can’t turn our houses into a Top Gear fan club, we too share our home with “regular” people. And when I say normal, I mean my roommate who has nothing to do with cars whatsoever. She is a young woman that knows of a V8 as much as I know what each of her 20 beauty products in the bathroom do. However, we need to remain social and keep talking to people instead of whispering to cars. We share houses with others.

I ruined my road trip to make a point

So, like I said, I was running towards my long-awaited road trip when I saw that damn teaser. My roommate goes: “Hey, that can’t be possible. You can’t have water in a car like that. It will kill the engine and everything else under the bonnet.” It was enough to ruin my trip, obviously. The mystery had to be solved. So I started telling her the story about the folks that built the car.

As you may remember, we are, in fact, looking at an entirely functioning hot tube built in a 1969 Cadillac Coupe DeVille. It’s the brainchild of two McMaster University graduates that have spent around six years to make it.

Not only did the two engineers from Los Angeles managed to keep the wheels spinning while the cabin is sunk, but the vehicle is actually able to hit 100 mph with all the water inside. Sure, reaching that speed will most likely imply a bit of spilling on the sides, but it drives like any other car does.

Now, guess how many hours it took me to explain her how that is possible!
