One More Fix for BMW R1200GS Oil Leak Problem, One More Recall

The American branch of BMW Motorrad is extending the transmission oil-leak recall which had less than 2013 R1200GS machines sold in Canada receiving a fix for the sealing system. The new recall has number 14V211000, and is a sequel of the April one.

1,420 motorcycles manufacturer November 2012 through August 2013 may experience the same high-pressure levels in the transmission, possibly causing a seal to be dislodged and allowing oil to leak onto the rear wheel. According to A&R, this problem has already caused a crash in Italy this March, but with no serious consequences.

BMW has apparently tried to fix the problem on two occasions, with an oil restrictor being installed but seemingly not being enough to solve the leak caused by the high pressure. BMW is notifying the dealers and customers, and will start bringing bikes for repairs as of early June. This time dealers will install a bracket which will prevent the transmission seal to be pushed out of its position.

The German manufacturer says that the problem is triggered by production variance, such as surface finish of the transmission housing, and the very position of the sealing ring. Pressure peaks can occur inside the gearbox as a result of gear changing and load reversals, official BMW sources mention.

BMW has detected the problem earlier in 2013 and attempted to fix it for the first time before the bikes have been sold to customers. Repeated testing until April 9, 2014 proved that the two solutions were not enough, and installing the aforementioned bracket was needed. Hopefully BMW solves this problem, as oil leaking on the rear tire of a bike is not exactly good for their customers, and neither it is for business.
