Google Maps continues to be the leading navigation app out there, but as everybody knows already, Google is trying to transform this service into a stand-alone platform whose capabilities go well beyond the simple concept of providing driving instructions.
And more recently, Google has started exploring the world of AR, announcing new features that allow users to get information about certain locations by simply pointing their phones’ cameras at them.

Data like the opening hours of a specific store as well as the busyness level are now available in AR mode, and it looks like this innovation has attracted the attention of several other companies that are looking to invest in this industry.

After Huawei recently announced its very AR-capable Google Maps rival, it’s now the turn of OPPO to explore the world of augmented reality.

The Chinese company will release a new application called CybeReal whose capabilities are obviously inspired by Google’s and which would also allow users to just get information on specific locations with their phone cameras.

At this point, it looks like OPPO is also eyeing the navigation side of such an implementation, though, for the time being, many details are still undisclosed. OPPO is expected to reveal full information about CybeReal on November 17 as part of the company’s OPPO INNO DAY 2020, an event where it’s expected to take the wraps off several new innovations that would be part of its next-generation lineup of products expected to go live in 2021 and the next few years.

For the moment, however, it’s not yet clear if OPPO wants to offer the new AR-powered capabilities to all Android users or keep them exclusive on its very own phones. There’s a chance, however, that OPPO would embrace a mixed approach, with CyberReal to come pre-loaded on its own devices, but also be offered as a manual download for the rest of Android users out there.
