One Dead and Four Injured Following Crash at the VLN Race on the Nurburgring

The VLN race held today on the famous Nurburgring was cancelled shortly after kicking off following a terrible accident that happened at Posten 80. Early reports claim that one person died and four more were injured.

It’s all pretty unsure now and there are few official statements at moment but it seems like the number 23 Nissan GT-R GT3 driven by Jann Margenborough flipped off the track and into the spectator area on the sidelines. The outcome is grim, with one person allegedly losing his life and another four being badly injured.

A witness claims that the car had enough speed to hit the guardrail and even went over the protection fence, where spectators were lined up to see the first VLN race of the year.

Following this incident, the race was cancelled and there will be no post-race ceremonies today. Furthermore, the police is on the scene and is expected to release more details later in the afternoon. The driver is apparently ok, as per Darren Cox from NISMO racing.

The official statement from VLN says (translated): “In the opening round of the VLN Endurance Championship Nürburgring an accident happened on Saturday, in which several spectators were injured. One of them died despite immediately initiated rescue operations in the Medical Center of the circuit. The other injured spectators were taken for further medical care to the hospital. The race was stopped to allow quick access to the scene of the rescue services and not restarted."

A participant vehicle drove off for a yet unknown reason from the track and eventually stopped beyond the safety guards of the circuit.

The VLN and the organizer of the race are deeply saddened and her thoughts are with the families and friends of the victims.”

In a video posted online just a few minutes ago, it looks like the Nissan carried too much speed into the corner and simply took off, landing on the side of the track, where spectators were sitting. We’ll keep you up to date as soon as we get more info.
