By comparison, the 2018 Tiguan is $25,345. And in truth, it’s tempting to choose the value-oriented utility vehicle over the $21,580 Golf SportWagon.
Care to guess what the U.S. buyer gets as standard for his or her hard-earned dollar bills? First of all, 16-inch steel wheels. The list goes on with halogen headlamps, cloth seating surfaces, rearview camera, and the Composition Color infotainment system that knows how to Bluetooth with your phone.
Add $1,975 and the compact-sized SUV gains 4Motion all-wheel-drive. The Wheel Package, which is priced at $495, one-ups the wheels to 17-inch aluminum alloys. There’s only one other noteworthy option, and that would be the Premium Package. For $1,295, Volkswagen will gladly throw in the 6.33-inch media system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, HD and XM satellite radio, and the ability to synchronize two smartphones simultaneously.
In addition to the connectivity, Premium Package also adds keyless access with push-button start, cargo cover and roof rails, leather on the steering wheel, as well as cruise control. Even with all the extras ticked off the list, the 2017 model year Volkswagen Tiguan Limited is indubitably worth the money.
Only one engine is available for the 174.3-inch compact utility vehicle, and that is the 2.0-liter TSI turbocharged inline-four. With double overhead camshafts, direct fuel injection, and variable intake timing, the 2.0 TSI delivers 200 horsepower on full song and 207 pound-feet from as low as 1,700 rpm. In regard to gas mileage, the Tiguan Limited boasts an EPA-estimated 20 miles per gallon city and 24 mpg highway. Not bad, but not excellent either.
The 4Motion-equipped model is adequately capable, partly thanks to the short overhang at the front. The design allows for a 28-degree approach angle, giving the Tiguan Limited credibility as a lifestyle-oriented vehicle. It’s also relatively spacious, with the trunk priding itself on a volume of 23.8 cu.ft.
