Now there’s a sight you don’t come across too often: deputies in Trumbull County, Ohio, conducted a traffic stop on an Amish horse-drawn buggy and found it equipped with a stereo system and packed with booze.
What’s worse, the police weren’t able to catch the 2 men riding in the buggy, as they fled on foot into a nearby wood, leaving the buggy and the poor horse behind. WSBT22 says the officers initiated the traffic stop after noticing the 2 men in the buggy seemed to be drinking.

The buggy continued on its (merry) way and refused to pull over and, eventually, the 2 men jumped out of it and ran away. They didn’t even wait for the buggy to come to a halt.

On top of the buggy, officers found a 12-pack of beer. Inside, they found more opened containers of alcohol and a very strange sight in a horse-drawn buggy: a stereo system, which, admittedly, is ideal for partying on the go (sans alcohol for the driver, of course).

“The buggy was impounded and someone was found to take care of the horse until the owner comes forward,”
the report notes. As of the time of writing, there’s no update on whether he ever came to claim his horse – and be slapped with a DUI charge.

This might sound like a joke but, yes, you can get a DUI for driving a carriage or riding a horse while intoxicated. As long as you’re on a public road and can pose a danger to yourself and motorists, you will have to follow the same laws against alcohol consumption as drivers do.

In other words, if you drink and ride a buggy or a horse, you will be charged if you get caught. Being cool enough to fit your buggy with a stereo system will get you no leniency.
