Yesterday, the latest Coupe M car entered production. The M4 will continue where the E92 M3 left off and will be seeking to make history, once again, in the segment, as promised to the plethora of fans of the brand out there.
The first ever car to be delivered to a customer worldwide, an Austin Yellow model, was introduced to the media present at the event by DTM race driver Martin Tomczyk and the BMW Munich plant Manager, Hermann Bohrer, the man that will usher in a new day and age for M production in the capital city of Bavaria.

There haven’t been any M models built here since 1991, when the original M3 went out of production putting an end to 5 years of engineering greatness. In that period of time over 17,970 Coupe E30 M3s were built, 786 of them convertibles.

Now, after 23 years, the Munich plant will be making a total of four models, including the M4, 3 Series Sedan, 3 Series Touring and 4 Series Coupe. The new M3 will be built at the Regensburg, where all M3 models (excepting the E30) were made up until now.

“With the BMW M4 Coupe a legend returns home. After 23 years we begin manufacturing of a BMW GmbH vehicle in the Munich Factory. There remain many employees who were involved in the production of the model series BMW M3 E30 ” explained Hermann Bohrer.

“That we will now build the BMW M4 Coupe here at the site, makes me personally proud. Also for our highly motivated and flexible team is a special appreciation,” he added.

Martin also had something to say about the debut of the M4: ”I am proud to be part of the BMW plant in Munich at the start of production for the BMW M4 coupe and to have driven the first car off the line. My BMW M4 Coupe is already on order in the color Austin Yellow: I can hardly wait to finally drive my personal BMW M4 Coupe.”

The Munich plant is the first one BMW ever had, employing over 7,250 employees from over 50 nations and breaking record after record of production over the years. In 2013, a record-breaking 247,330 cars were built there with a matching 464,968 number of engines. Around 950 cars roll off the lines daily, with more than 2,000 engines being assembled every 24 hours.

The new M4 will reach dealerships this summer with prices starting at $65,125 (handling and shipping included). The S55 engine powering the beast makes 431 HP and 550 Nm of torque out of 3,000cc thanks to two turbochargers and BMW’s TwinPower technology. 62 mph comes in 4.1 seconds using the DCT gearbox and 0.2 seconds slower with the good old fashioned 6-speed manual.
