The moment we've all been waiting for since 2009, when BMW unveiled the VISION Concept finally came this week. Tuesday, BMW presented the i8 to the world and the automotive industry seemed to stop for a second.
The official presentation was done by Dr. Norbert Reithofer, in an event that also saw the older and smaller brother, i3, introduced to the stage. A new era of sustainable mobility has begun.
The two models share the CFRP technology but also the electric motors. In the i3 they add up to 170 whilst on the i8 you only get 131. However, the sports car has another, internal combustion unit at the back, delivering 231 HP and 320 Nm of torque.
Combined, the two add up to 362 HP and 570 Nm of torque, taking the 1,490 kg car up to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds and returning an average fuel consumption of 2.5 l/100 km (94 mpg) in the European test cycle.
