This understated little sportscar is actually more important than it might appear at first glance, as the BMW Z4s Drive28i is the first of its kind to be equipped with the new 2-liter TwinPower Turbo engine. The carmaker makes claims that the unit provides increased torque and performance plus reduced fuel consumption, but only time will tell if this is what BMW fans want.

Taking technology from the TwinPower Turbo 3.0-liter, the new engine will combine high-pressure direct-injection and BMW’s VALVETRONIC intake control (hence the name: TwinPower) with a forced induction system consisting of a single twin-scroll turbocharger.

The engine that will arrive in the US-Spec Z4 this fall will produce 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque (353 Nm), which is 30 percent more twisting power than the normally aspirated 3.0-liter inline-6 that it replaces (BMW Z4 sDrive30).

The absolute figures, including those for the driving performance of the new BMW Roadster, are expected to be finalised mid-year, but while the 2.0-liter is down on power, performance will be increased due to the fact that it is available lower down in the rev range. t’s not just power that BMW focused on with the 4-cylinder, as it is expected to provide a 20 percent increase in efficiency over the naturally aspirated engine it replaces when combined with an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

“The patented BMW VALVETRONIC system with seamlessly variable intake valve lift control dispenses with the throttle valve system typical of conventional engines. Instead, combustion air mass is controlled inside the engine, resulting in much faster response. Pumping losses are kept to a minimum, making the engine more efficient,” BMW boasts.
