NYC's Mayor Goes Forward With Red Light Cameras on Every Corner

New York City’s mayor Michael Bloomberg believes that more red light cameras could save more lives and reduce traffic incidents. Thus he plans to add red traffic lights cameras at every street corner. Bloomberg expressed his opinion after a report was released saying that $52 million in fines were issued to drivers caught by cameras. As a result, Bloomberg intends to increase the number of cameras permitted on city streets from 150 to 225.

“Maybe what we should do is do it and start publishing in the paper who does it and then a list of the senators and assemblymen who keep us from having cameras. Every time there's somebody hit, it would be nice to say 'Ok, assemblyman and senator so-and-so didn't think that person's life was important ... This is our lives of our people we're talking about! This is not something cute and we've got to do something about it. We cannot afford to put a cop on every corner. We're going to have to do more with technology," Michael Bloomberg was quoted as saying by NYDailyNews.

The mayor has also planed to support the speed cameras project in order to catch drivers going too fast. This is a proposal that has made the subject of an Assembly bill, that is still waiting to be introduced in the senate.

Altogether, opinions are divided with some saying that the red light camera project is meant more to increase income for municipalities and has nothing to do with safety.
