Nurburgring Survey Makes You Choose Between Better Barriers and Track/Racecars Limitations

As you may remember, the Nurburgring is going through a rather twisty phase, following the deadly VLN racecar crash earlier this year. To improve the track’s safety, Nurburgring officials have come up with a survey. Time for you to decide.

The poll has been introduced on the track’s Facebook page and it’s a rather simple one. It only takes a few minutes to go though the questions and I’m inviting you to go though it here, simply because I want the ‘Ring to remain the useful handling-assessing tool that it is.

At first, the survey might seem like a good idea. But when you get down to the details, you notice the owners of the tracks are basically asking you to choose between the following:

  • improved barriers and fences

  • changing the track’s layout or continuing to enforce the recently-expanded speed limit policy that has been introduced after the crash mentioned above (more on how this affects lap records here)

  • introducing power limitations or mandatory aerodynamic packages that would keep the racecars on the road

For me, the first version is the only acceptable one. As for the following two, it seems like the Russian billionaire who owns the track wants others do the work for him. Regardless, the people will have their say and seeing how closely the Nurburgring changes will mirror the public’s votes is just as important as the choices themselves. The situation should take one route or another by the end of the year, so stay tuned to find out more.
