One of the most startling parts of the Nurburgring is the high degree of randomness the infamous German track delivers. Also, when the skies above the circuit open, and they often do, the level of randomness explodes.
We're here to bring you a recent example of that, which comes from a recent Touristenfahrten (Tourist Days) Ring session, one that saw rain playing with the drivers lapping the Nordschleife - the events you see here took place on Sunday, while many were enjoying themselves on the couch.
For this adventure, we'll be focusing on the Kallenhard twist, a banked right-hander that becomes easily driftable once the track gets wet. Sure, drifting is forbidden on the Green Hell, but you'd probably have to cause some serious issues before getting in trouble for dropping the occasional oversteer through some twists.
And if you're curious about what "serious issues" mean when it comes to Touristenfahrten events, a good example would be the E39 BMW M5 whose oil spill caused a five-vehicle crash, leading to multiple injuries and the police investigating the driver.
Returning to the Kallenhard action we have here, the footage kicks off with a first-generation Audi R8 demonstrating just how rear-biased its quattro all-wheel-drive is. However, with the track being soaking wet, the driver didn't need to push the V10 too far to get a long slide.
This is where the randomness mentioned in the intro steps in, as we soon get to see a Renault Clio RS EDC going through the bend at moderate speed, with the driver losing the rear end long after passing the apex. Fortunately, this front-wheel-drive error was a near crash and nothing more - judging by the stickers on the hot hatch, it was a rental.
As you can expect, the video is packed with BMW drivers demonstrating while they went for the roundel when choosing their cars. The lap times would've been wasted anyway, due to the rain, so we see no problem here.
