Now Massa Asks for Greater Penalties for SC Overtaking

Shortly after Fernando Alonso apologized for his public outburst at the FIA stewards in Valencia, his teammate Felipe Massa now urged the ruling body to take a closer look at the safety car rules so that future incidents such as the one from last weekend will not happen again.

Both Massa and Alonso had to suffer from the deployment of the safety car on Lap 9, as they were trapped behind it for an entire lap. That eventually dropped them to 10th (Alonso) and 15th (Massa) after their pit stop, while Hamilton chose to pass the safety car and later on finished the race in the runner-up position.

While insisting he doesn't want to stir up things between Ferrari and the FIA once again, Massa asked the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) to proceed to greater penalties for SC overtakers in the future.

I don't particularly want to go over what happened after that, because it changes nothing in that our race was ruined. However, what happened needs to be looked into because it is not normal than someone commits a serious infraction like overtaking the Safety Car, when there is a dangerous situation on track and is not really penalized in practical terms,” said Massa.

With the WMSC already announcing a meeting next week to discuss the matter in detail, Massa believes the first steps have already been taken to avoid “Valencia mishappenings” in the future.

The team has told me that, next week there will be a meeting of the Sporting Working Group: that's good and it's an obvious indication that the FIA is paying close attention to the matter,” concluded Massa in his Ferrari blog.
