The North American Car and Truck of the Year organization (NACOTY) announced at the beginning of the weekend the newest list of the cars and trucks which will compete for the 2011 North American Car and Truck of the Year title.
The list includes 14 cars and an equal number of trucks. Their number will be cut down in December, prior to the announcement of the winners at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in December.
Perhaps for the first time in history, an electric vehicle and a plug-in hybrid are included in the list. We are talking about the two newest enemies on the market, the Nissan Leaf and the Chevrolet Volt. As far as producers are concerned, Ford, Hyundai/Kia, GM and Nissan have the most nominations, while Audi or Jaguar only have one entry on this list.
The cars have been selected by a panel which includes 50 automotive journalists from the US and Canada. So far, the competition is almost and all-American deal, with domestic automakers winning the North American Car of the Year nine times and the North American Truck of the Year 11 times.
