Nomadic Power's Smart "MobileBattery" Could Be the Weapon to Eradicate Range Anxiety

That is, if you like towing stuff when going on roadtrips, and by stuff we don't mean a trailer or a fellow driver betrayed by his car, but a sort of mobile battery that promises to extend EV ranges far beyond their current capabilities.

So, it is range anxiety that bothers you? Well, have no fear, Nomadic Power is here with their MobileBattery gizmo. Sure, it's not the range extender one has in mind, but they tell us it can do a helluva job in taking your EV one wheel spin farther.

Before we get into details, you need to know that we're talking about a German startup with a development center in Stuttgart and a marketing team in Palo Alto, California. Also, Nomadic Power received a 2 million euro ($2.2 million) grant from the European Commission for its “MobileBattery,” so those folks in charge of Europe's well-being think the invention is pretty useful.

Simply put, the gadget is just a lithium-ion battery pack mounted on a small futuristic trailer, towed by an EV. According to company officials, they should be capable of providing 40 kWh or 85 kWh (same as Tesla Model S) battery packs.

For example, an 85 kWh Nomad battery is capable of taking a small electric car up to 600 kilometers (373 miles). That is a good number if you want our opinion on the matter.

The smart aspect of the gadget lies in its ability to control the software it uses and forecast energy consumption. It sure looks like a viable solution, as long as people are willing to attach a mini-trailer to their EV and carry it around when going on a trip.
