Nolan - Sony Collaboration Over Augmented Reality Helmet

It’s clear as daylight that the next big step in motorcycling infotainment is represented by augmented reality helmets. With Skully's offer turning into a dead project, here comes Nolan and Sony with a whole new N-Com ARX concept presented at EICMA this month.

The N-Com ARX is a project helmet developed by Nolangroup in collaboration with Sony, which, through the concept of augmented reality allows riders to stay informed about vital parameters without taking their eyes off the road.

The helmet developed specially for N-Com ARX incorporates Sony’s unique holographic waveguide technology provided in the form of an optical module, which takes the light created in the optical engine and projects a virtual image through the holographic optical elements to the eyes of the wearer.

For ease of access, the N-Com communication system and the Sony optical module are both commanded by a specially developed smartphone app. The range of useful information the system provides on the see-through display, combined with audio indications, allow the rider to concentrate on the riding part more than with standard gauges and dashboard displays.

“It has been a pleasure to work with Nolangroup on building this Technology Demonstrator. At Sony we always aim to exceed market expectations and indeed we believe our hologram waveguide technology will bring about brand new experiences to the wearers and in this case the motorcyclists” said Hiroshi Mukawa, who leads the development of hologram waveguide technology as General Manager of SIG business department at Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation.

However, N-Com Division Manager Claudio Corollo claimed that this new technology cannot be marketed immediately, and is more of a preview of what clients should expect in the future. Through an open-source platform, N-Com ARX offers possibilities for the development of such HUD applications and hopefully more companies will be interested in this to create a compatible link between the bike and the helmet.
