They may have used the same car to shoot scenes in Adam Carolla’s Winning: The Racing Life of Paul Newman, but it seems nobody is willing to pay $5 million for this 1979 Datsun 280XX. The price may seem big, but we are talking about one of his very first race cars after all, one the Hollywood star even won an SCCA National Championship with.
First, the movie. Winning: The Racing Life of Paul Newman is a documentary chronicling the 35-year car racing career of Paul Newman, and it’s showcasing the Hollywood actor’s racing life as both a prolific driver and owner. The biopic is not the first to revolve around the life of the great actor, but it’s possibly the first to focus on his passion for the grid instead of his Hollywood career.
Secondly, the car. Apparently, the 1979 Datsun 280ZX is also starring in the movie above and one of the race cars Newman drove. The current owner of the collectible claims the vehicle is currently undergoing restorations in a garage close to Lime Rock Race Track in Connecticut. Whether or not it’s authentic, we can’t tell for sure, but according to the eBay ad, the owner has both the log books and notarized bills of sale to prove it.
As we said, the reserve was not met, and there was only one person to bid on it until June 8th when the sale ended. Considering the car was on sale for ten days, we can only assume nobody thought the Z-Series was worth $5 million. However, we still find there’s something fishy about the ad on eBay, so you should take this with a grain of salt.
