No Races at Gateway in 2011

Sad news for those hoping to catch another exciting race at the Gateway International Raceway next year, as Dover Motorsports, the owner of the track, announced it will not host any races in the upcoming season. That includes both Nationwide Series races and the single Camping World Truck race.

According to Terry Harmeson, the vice president of the Gateway track, the decision has been made due to the failure of the track to generate enough money. The fact that the 2011 races here will no longer be held does not affect the current season, meaning the October 23 Nationwide race is still on.

"This was a difficult decision in light of the many years of earnest and continued efforts on everyone's part to develop a viable market for these events in one of our nation's greatest cities,” Harmeson said in a statement cited by NASCAR.

There's no telling if the track will back in the circuit in 2012. Harmeson promises he and his team will try their best to find ways to revert the finances of the track. Dover Motorsports CEO Denis McGlynn however talks about selling it.

"We have a group of extremely dedicated and talented employees who make Gateway a great destination and we deeply appreciate all the support we have had from the racing community over the years -- from racing fans and drivers to sponsors, team owners and sanctioning bodies,”
McGlynn said before talking about selling.

“However, economics dictate that we evaluate all of our options for this facility, including its possible sale."
