No Problem Between Audi and VW on A1 Rotary EV

Audi was believed to take its very own route when going the electric way and develop a special version of the A1 model equipped with a lithium ion battery pack and gasoline combustion rotary engine. Still, rumors regarding such a project were pointing to a dispute within the Volkswagen Group who called Audi's intention "anarchic", according to a report issued by Autonews.

An Audi representative on the other hand denied a potential dispute between the two companies, but hasn't mentioned whether the brand with the four rings intends to go further with plans to develop a greener A1.

"There is no problem between VW and Audi," he told the aforementioned source.

Rumors regarding what was called an E-REV emerged in 2010 when sources close to Audi claimed that the A1 subcompact could get a new version as the parent manufacturer is looking into ways to increase efficiency of the range. It was initially believed that the future A1 could use an electric drivetrain and a Wankel rotary range extender, but Audi hasn't provided too many details on the project.

The Audi A1 e-tron, the first project that used an electric motor and a Wankel engine, was unveiled last year in Geneva and used a transversely mounted synchronous electric motor, which has a continuous output of 45 kW (61 hp), with peak power of 75 kW (102 hp) available in short bursts. As with any electric vehicle, 150 Nm of torque is continuously available, with the peak torque reaching 240 Nm.
