Even though I just know that some riders would once more becry the “big brother” attitude when it comes to a new helmet campaigns, the new, “Take the Good Road” project is really cool.
India is one of the biggest emerging motorcycle markets of the world, with more than 130 million motorbikes on the roads, and several millions being sold each year. Too bad that only few riders choose to wear a helmet, thus leading to huge motorcycle-related casualties. Others are simply too poor to afford helmets. Some obviously think that even if they go down, they’ll have to replace the helmet, and this might be a new expense they can’t afford, so wearing one is no use at all.

Still, a group of concerned people have kicked off the “Take the Good Road” project which aims to popularize wearing a motorcycle helmet while riding. The main idea is to slowly introduce a new technology which will not allow a bike to be started unless the rider has his or her helmet on.

While the costs for such an endeavor are kind of unfathomable, this project may become successful if young riders getting new bikes would set a good example, and help turning wearing a motorcycle helmet into the next cool thing in India.

Apparently the system has been tested in the country for about one year, and the multiple enhancements have been made to the helmets. Passing into the mass-production stage should also provide the users with solid reliability and an extended network to service the units. When helmet laws fail or are not applied, maybe being cool can help.
