No Batteries, No Production! Fisker Awaiting A123 Battery Plant Sale

Fisker Automotive Inc. has stopped production of the Karma luxury plug-in hybrid, due to the fact that their sole provider of batteries, A123 Systems Inc. has gone bust, and is now awaiting a new owner, so that production of Karma lithium-ion battery packs can be resumed.

The CEO of Fisker, Tony Posawatz stated: “Because we have no batteries, there’s no production right now. Inventory is starting to get a little low [. . .] We’d like to restart production as quickly as possible. We should know the outcome of the auction by the middle of December.” He also announced that the actual sale of A123 will take place on December 6, in a specially-organized auction, where Johnson Controls Inc. and Wanxiang Group Co. of China will be present.

Fisker is also keen to become profitable, from the sale of more of their Karmas, yet this has become slightly difficult, due to just enough (and no more) funding, a recent and rather negative review by Consumer Reports and the criticism brought about former US presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, who disagreed with the fact that Fisker got low-cost federal loans, in order to keep going.
