Nitrous Volvo Battles Turbo Volvo in 1,500 HP Swedish Street Races

The Swedish street racing scene is not exactly the kind of social phenomenon you hear about every day, and yet these people are taking full advantage of the cold air that feeds their engines.

And yes, they do use rather boxy Volvo wagons, but the goodies under the hood are of pure American inspiration. A street race series that took place on the streets of Sweden earlier this month is representative for the country’s dark racing scene.

In the blue/gray corner, we find a Volvo that’s motivated by a 588 cubic inches big block V8. To reach its street domination goal, the machine turns to a pair of nitrous shots. And while the driver didn’t offer more details, he did mention the blue eyes of the pig sitting atop the rear wing are lit when the second shot is activated.

As for the white corner, this hosts an old-school approach. The hood cutout allows us to see the tip of an iceberg made of an S480 LSx V8 that uses a monster turbine. The owner explains that, during a recent dyno run, the Gottenburn machine delivered 764 hp. Further down the power line, we find a Powerglide automatic tranny.

While the other driver wouldn’t give us the pony number for his family machine, we can tell his Volvo also plays in the 700 hp league.

That’s because the two sweet Swedish exaggerations are close to each other from start to finish. To make sure of the result, the cars engage in two races, which brings double the fun those who attend the illegal event (you know you shouldn’t try it at home).

Heck, the sheer tire size of this Volvos is enough to keep the adrenaline level pumping.
