Most engines fitted to production cars are detuned to about 75% of what they can really do, for fuel efficiency and durability reasons. Some engine mods don’t really affect the durability of the engine that much, if done properly, but a nitrous oxide system is definitely not one of those mods.
The 1990s Ford Mustang in this video eloquently illustrates the point, when setting off on a drag race with a 2012 Mustang, on a straight piece of road, in the dead of night. As he floors the throttle, too much pressure builds up inside the engine block, and it finds the weakest link in the assembly to escape - the intake system, blowing up the top part of the engine clean through the hood.
The result is a rather spectacular bang, made even more so by the sheer darkness that surrounds the two ‘Stangs. The owner definitely wasn’t pleased, but at least he didn’t use all of the gas in the race, to have some left for a mindless session of laughter, to take the edge off after this unfortunate event.
